Did you know...

The scribe artist of the Book of Kells worked on the Breves Causae section (the short summary of each gospel at the start of the Book of Kells) quite late in the project. He changed the writing style from the formal insular majuscule used to write most of the manuscript to the more informal insular minuscule often used for less important work. He does not simply shift from one style to the other but blends them together so that a page starts out as majuscule and gradually morphs into minuscule by the end. This makes it very difficult to copy the manuscript and was not something I had noticed before attempting it. Even on what appear to be relatively simple pages of text, the Book of Kells is still full of surprises!
