Dr David Alston, 'The Rosses of Cadboll and Berbice (Guyana): Kindred spirits?' Thursday, 22nd October 2026
Thursday, 22nd October 2026
7:30pm: ‘The Rosses of Cadboll and Berbice (Guyana): Kindred spirits?’ talk by Dr David Alston
In this talk, Dr David Alston (author or ‘Slaves and Highlanders: Silenced Histories of Scotland and the Caribbean’) will reveal the largely unknown story of the Ross family of Cadboll and their links with Guyana. David will also discuss the lives of their mixed-race children, shedding light on the experiences of those who are often excluded from the historical narrative.
This talk has been arranged for Black History Month which runs throughout October, aiming to broaden understanding around the achievements and resilience shown by African, Caribbean and Asian and other adversely racialised communities across Scotland. BHM also aims to shine a light on the key role Black and minority ethnic communities and individuals have played in influencing Scotland’s past and present. Events have been organised across Scotland and you can access the full programme here.
