Message from the Centre Manager – September 2026

It is fair to say that Autumn has arrived, bringing cooler temperatures and a slower pace following the buzz of summer. This is therefore a great time to turn our attention to the myriad ideas and projects which have been floating in the background.

Firstly, you may have noticed some fantastic new posts on our social media in recent weeks. This is thanks to our new Museum Support Coordinator, Sophie Craig, who has been appointed to us through a new project titled ‘Pathways to the Future’ by Museums Heritage Highland. Sophie is working with 4 museums across the Highlands to provide support in various ways as the project aims to reduce pressures and increase capacity for members of staff. You can read more about the project and her work here. We are very grateful to be part of Pathways and have plenty of exciting ideas on the go, so watch this space for more fun content.

This time of year is also a chance to return to activities which require just a bit more time and focus. Our cataloguing group have resumed their Monday morning meetings after having taken a break for the summer holidays. We are continuing to work on our photo albums, slowly but surely rearranging the hundreds of photographs into new themes. Each week has consisted of many trips down memory lane and helped sharpen the group’s detective skills as they try to uncover the who, where and when of each photo.

Speaking of projects and looking ahead, our next talk offers a look into an exciting venture by the Caithness Broch Project. This grass-roots charity aims to rebuild a broch using original broch builders’ techniques to provide an insight into how these incredible structures were built, and how Iron Age people lived their lives in Caithness. Indeed this will be a pivot from our usual historic topics as Kenneth McElroy, co-founder of the enterprise, will explain what the Project have been doing over the past few years.
