Book of the Month: The Scottish Baking Bible

Book review of The Scottish Baking Bible by Liz Ashworth

Review by Sam Grove, Centre Manager

If you would like to learn some classic Scottish recipes, look no further. This is a brilliant little book filled with easy to follow recipes both sweet and savoury: from Elgin-style butteries to wee jam tarts. Ashworth has done well to include recipes from across Scotland and each is accompanied by a short description of its origins. Bob Dewar’s whimsical illustrations make this book even more lovely – and provide a handy guide as to how each baked good should look by the end!

Beginning with an introduction which gives the reader a good overview of Scottish baking tradition, the book then lays out some handy hints and tips to know before diving into the recipes. One of the nicest details if the inclusion of recipes Ashworth has acquired from family and friends, such as ‘Rita’s pineapple loaf’ or ‘Uncle George’s biscuits’, which gives the book a lovely personal feel and captures the community spirit of Scottish baking traditions.

In short, there is something for everyone with the sections as follows: Bannocks, Breads and Scones; Biscuits; Pastries, Tarts and Traybakes; Cakes and Wee Fancies. This would make a perfect stocking filler for anyone, from experienced bakers to those looking for a new hobby – even the most inexperienced baker will find they are able to whip up something from this book.
