Tarbat Historic Trust was established in 1980 to conserve and restore the Tarbat Old Church, now a Grade A listed building, in Portmahomack. A religious site has been here since at least the 8th Century, and the present building dates from the mid-18th Century. Many important pieces of Pictish sculpture have been discovered in the Church and its, as well as a mysterious carved stone ball dating to at least 2500BC. This is therefore a site of international importance.
An integral part of the trust's work is to support the archaeological investigation. This has been on-going since 1991 under the direction of Professor Martin Carver and his team from the University of York. This is the first excavation of a Pictish monastic settlement in Scotland and has greatly added to our knowledge of the country's early history. Work on the site finished in 2007.
