TARBAT GEOLOGY EXHIBITION

The Tarbatness Peninsula is an area of oustanding natural beauty. Situated at the tip of the Great Glen Fault the Geology of Tarbatness was formed during the Devonian period between 409 and 363 million years ago. The stunning cliffs and rock formations are of Upper and Middle Old Red Sandstone which produces colourful red and yellow variations.  The redness of the sandstone is produced by Iron Oxide which is usually found in dry arid areas such as deserts.  During the Devonian period Britain was near the Equator which would explain the red pigment of the sandstone and indicate that Scotland was once a desert-like area.

THE ARDAGH HOARD and the TARA BROOCH

The Ardagh Chalice is believed to date from the 8th Century and is one of the finest examples of Celtic metalwork ever to be discovered.  The craftsmanship employed in the creation of the Chalice and brooches shows an oustanding degree of technical knowledge and competence. The  Tara   Brooch   from the same period has  an incredible 76 types of design.

Finds from the Tarbat Monastic site suggest that similar objects may have been in production here during the same period.

We are very grateful to the NMS for the opportunity to display these stunning replicas.

The originals can be seen in the National Museum of Ireland in Dublin.
